Blessing Bowl with Tūī Pair

A one-of-a-kind ceramic vessel, made slowly and entirely by hand in my studio.

I make each Blessing Bowl using the traditional pinch pot method, building the form by hand rather than using a mould or wheel. This gives every bowl its own organic shape, subtle texture and character.

The tūī pair and Māhoe branches are hand painted and etched into the clay using a technique called sgraffito, creating the fine black-and-white artwork across the surface. The inside is finished with a lustrous gold glaze, contrasting beautifully with the matte exterior.

The bowl is fired twice in the kiln, with the second firing creating the rich golden interior. From the shaping of the clay to the painting, etching and finishing, every part is done by me.

There are no words on this piece - the tūī pair and the form of the bowl are the artwork. It is made to be a piece you live with, display and treasure.

Because each bowl is individually made, no two will ever be exactly alike. Small variations in shape, texture and painted detail are part of what makes your bowl an original piece of Amber Smith ceramic art.
