Blessing Bowl – Love Aroha
A piece about love
Aroha is a word I return to again and again in my work. It's love, affection and compassion, and for me it is about the connection we have with one another.
The Tūī and Pīwakawaka meeting around the bowl, together with the words Aroha and Love, make this a piece about love that is shared - given, received and treasured.
The rim of the bowl forms a soft heart shape, with a pair of Tūī on one side and a pair of Pīwakawaka on the other. The words Aroha and Love are worked into the design, bringing the meaning of the piece right into the artwork.
I make each bowl entirely by hand in my studio, shaping the clay and creating the artwork individually. The organic form, hand-painted details and slightly irregular surface are all part of the making process. No two bowls are ever exactly alike.
This is a substantial piece of ceramic art, made to be displayed and lived with. It has a presence that changes depending on where you place it and how the light catches the golden interior
Made by me
Every Blessing Bowl is individually made and hand finished by me in my studio in Aotearoa.
There are no moulds, decals or identical production pieces. Small variations in shape, texture and painted detail are part of the character of handmade ceramics and make your bowl an original piece of Amber Smith art.

Blessing Bowl Care Instructions
The golden glaze inside each bowl is actual metal! The glaze used is rich in copper and manganese (and some other secret ingredients) - this means that it is not food safe. I'm sure that you would not use this bowl for your cereal but it has to be said :)
The blessing bowls are deliberately matte on the outside. Long term use of water in your bowl will stain it, especially if there is plant material decaying in the water.
