Guardians of the sea
Parāoa Aotearoa
A mother whale and her calf move peacefully beneath the night sky, surrounded by the deep blue of the sea.
Above them, Marama, the moon, watches over the natural world. Below, flowing kōwhaiwhai patterns move through the waves, representing new life intertwined with the lives of those who came before - the connection between parent and child, and the love and protection of whānau.
There is something powerful and protective about the way a mother whale travels with her calf. Together, they carry a sense of deep love, protection and belonging.
In Māori tradition, whales are associated with the great journeys to Aotearoa, and with guidance, protection and safe passage across the ocean.
A beautiful piece about the love that watches over us, the people who guide us, and the connections that carry us through life.
